For this project, I combined my two biggest interests; psychology and design. I created an experiment. I wanted to see if I took principles of design that have been proven to prime the brain for joy, happiness, and excitement and presented the design to people if I could actually produce those emotions. My design was inspired heavily by the book “Joyful” by Ingrid Fetell Lee. Color, for example, is a huge piece of this. There have been studies done where changing the colors of rooms people exist in affected their mood, phenomena where adding color and art into cities helped reduce the crime rate, and even studies were done that show the range of colors which most people would associate with joy. Other principles like roundness can prime the brain for happy emotions. Round objects have been used in play for thousands of years, it comes with a sense of freedom and fun. Studies show that our brains prefer round objects to angular ones because our brains subconsciously are attuned to fear those objects because in earlier years they were associated with danger. I played around with these principles and created a retail space for a brand that felt fitting. I showed it to a large group of people and asked simply, how would you describe this space and how it makes you feel.
